IPS Tags Explained: Everything UK Domain Owners Need to Know

IPS tags control which registrar manages your .uk domain. This guide explains how they work, how to find yours, and how to change tags safely.

If you own a .uk domain, your registrar has an IPS tag associated with it — even if you've never seen the term before. Understanding IPS tags is essential when switching providers or troubleshooting DNS issues.

Why Nominet uses IPS tags

Nominet is the registry for .uk domain names. Rather than issuing transfer codes for every move, they use IPS tags as a routing mechanism. Each accredited registrar has a unique tag. Your domain's tag determines who can renew, update nameservers, and manage the registration.

How to find your current IPS tag

Run a WHOIS lookup on your domain — our domain check tool shows the current tag and whether the domain is already on our tag (CGC-HOSTING). You can also find the tag in your registrar's control panel, usually under domain details or transfer settings.

Changing your IPS tag safely

  1. Ensure your domain is unlocked and not within 60 days of a previous transfer (Nominet's standard cooling-off period for some operations).
  2. Initiate the move at your new registrar first — create an order or transfer request so they expect the incoming domain.
  3. Update the tag at your current registrar to the new provider's tag.
  4. Allow 24–48 hours for Nominet to process the change.

Common mistakes to avoid

Typo in the tag — Tags are case-insensitive but must be exact. Ours is CGC-HOSTING.

Changing tag before ordering — Always set up your account and order with the receiving registrar first, so support can match the incoming transfer.

Ignoring expiry dates — Transfer before your domain expires. An expired domain may enter redemption and complicate the move.
